Tired of constantly blaming the controller after a lost game of Fifa? Or that everyone knows all football players and you don’t get any further than Messi and Ronaldo? At the end of the spring, a football game that actually has nothing to do with football will be released, namely Mario Strikers: Battle League. Nintendo is going to release another version of Mario football in collaboration with Next Level Games and in this article we look ahead to what is to come.

The first version of Mario Strikers was released in 2005. Back then it was called Mario Smash Football and came out for the GameCube. There was a sequel to the Wii in 2007 called Mario Strikers Charged. After 15 years there will now be a third part, where the gameplay will be basically the same. Football, knocking people over, items and a wide variety of Mario characters to make a team.

Mario Strikers: Battle League Football Release Date

On February 9, 2022, Nintendo released the trailer for Mario Strikers: Battle League Football . In it we see our favorite Mario characters who aggressively want to steal the ball from each other. With matching rock music, you as a viewer will be put in the mood for when the game comes out, namely on June 10, 2022.

Success Formula

As reported, this game was developed in collaboration with Next Level Games. Next Level also developed the first two versions of Mario Strikers and is also known for Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon and Luigi’s Mansion 3. They also developed Punch Out for the Wii in 2009. The last Luigi’s Mansion was a success; will this game be that too?

Blast through the matches

Before you start a football game, you first have to choose your team leader and other characters are added around your team leader. In Mario Strikers: Battle League Football you play a 5-on-5 football game in which there are hardly any rules, except for the most essential: the ball just has to cross the goal line to score a point.

Furthermore, there are hardly any restrictions. No offsides, no fouls, no VAR, no umpires and no football hooligans entering the field unsolicited or throwing beer at the players. Even someone unfamiliar with football will appreciate this game. Want to throw a banana peel so that a player trips over it? Want to pound your opponent so hard that he crashes into the electric wall? This game will make you forget your passive aggressive thoughts!

Nintendo has already turned a wide variety of sports into Mario specialties. An example of this is Mario Tennis. In it, a regular game of tennis takes on a whole different dimension by using items and special moves. A similar formula applies to Mario Strikers: Battle League Football, where deploying items in combination with special moves gives that extra Mario dimension.

Mario Strikers: Battle League Football Gameplay

On May 6, 2022, a second gameplay trailer was released by Nintendo, showing us how the game works for five minutes. The trailer is spoken in Japanese, but you don’t need a Japanese linguist to understand the trailer. The images speak for themselves. In a way, the game looks the same in terms of gameplay as its previous editions. As far as I’m concerned, this isn’t a problem, it doesn’t hurt to build on your previous successes.

In addition to showing the controllers and actions, we also see the use of the so-called Hyper Strike. This is a charge attack that has a different execution for each character. The Hyper Strike can only be performed by your team leader and is accompanied by a short animated scene, after which your super strike is performed. The Hyper Strike gives just that extra charge to make the game a bit more unique.

The trailer also shows that it is possible to choose a personalized outfit for your team leader. Besides the looks, this outfit also influences your stats in the match. Some outfits make you faster and others stronger. Finally, we see the possibility of online multiplayer, something that was not possible with the previous two versions. It is even possible to search for a game online with two people via split-screen.
