An opponent feared by many trainers, Cliff is one of the leaders of Team Go Rocket in Pokémon GO. Discover in this guide how to prepare for this fight and how to win against him.
Whether in the license games or the cartoon, Team Rocket is inseparable from the world of Pokémon. While many fans have Jessie, James, and Meowth’s tirade or their failed attempts to capture Pikachu in mind, Team Rocket remains a dangerous organization with fearsome trainers .
In 2019, Niantic added these villains to the Pokémon GO universe. Notably new, however, the game introduced a trio of trainers never before seen in classic games but particularly tough: the bosses.
Cliff, a leader as imposing as he is feared
Cliff is one of the trio of leaders. He represents, along with Arlo and Sierra, the last threat to face just before Giovanni, the boss of Team Go Rocket.
Cliff is recognizable by his imposing build, his large size and his matte skin. He is also the only one of the three leaders to have blue accents in his Team Go Rocket uniform. But unlike regular minions, Cliff can’t be seen around every corner . If you want to face him, there are a few requirements to meet.
How to meet Cliff in Pokémon GO?
To encounter Cliff or the other Team Rocket bosses in Pokémon GO, you must first defeat Team Go Rocket minions .
You can spot them easily by looking at the Pokéstops near you. All of the black ones are occupied by Team Rocket minions. Regardless of your level, it’s pretty easy to beat them. By eliminating a minion, you will automatically recover a mysterious element. This element is essential to reconstitute a special object: the Radar Rocket .
Kill 6 Team Rocket minions to be able to create the Radar. It is only once this object in your possession that you will be able to come across Cliff during your walks.
Be careful though because activating the Radar Rocket does not automatically unlock Cliff’s arrival. Once the radar is activated, leaders can appear on your map, but the available leader is random . If you see someone other than Cliff, keep walking until you see him. It will stand in front of a black Pokéstop .
All Team Go Rocket leaders are feared because while each leader’s first Pokémon is the same each encounter, the other two Pokémon used are random . Cliff is no exception to the rule.
- His first Pokémon sent into battle is Tadmorv .
- The second Pokémon he sends into battle is randomly chosen from the following 3 Pokémon: Venusaur , Mackogneur and Nostenfer .
- Finally, the third and final Pokémon on his team is also random. Then expect to come across one of the following Pokémon: Charizard , Arcanine and the most dangerous of all, Tyranitar .
Note that some Pokémon appear more frequently than others. If you face Cliff, for example, you have a 50% chance of falling against Tyranitar during your duel.
Which Pokémon or types should be favored to beat Cliff in Pokémon GO?
Before embarking on a duel against Cliff, it is therefore essential to compose your team well. This detail is all the more important since you can beat it in one go without having to heal your best Pokémon in case of failure.
To overcome your first Pokémon, the options are quite numerous. Tadmorv is indeed vulnerable to Ground-type and Psychic-type attacks. Use Pokémon with two attacks of one of these types to eliminate it in seconds. If you have them, opt for example for Mewtwo or Alakazam which are safe bets. Other Pokémon like Rhinastoc or Laggron will also be effective against Tadmorv but also very useful for the rest of the fight.
Battre Florizarre, Mackogneur ou Nostenfer
The second match may be the most technical because several options can be considered. However, you can focus on 2 types of attacks that are very effective on both Venusaur and Machamp: Flying attacks and Psychic attacks . Both Pokémon are susceptible to it, so you can perfectly save for this fight Mewtwo or Alakazam if you chose them.
If you want to provide a backup option, favor a Flying-type Pokemon like Legendary Birds (if they have two Flying attacks) or Pidgeot.
If Nostenfer comes out, you have more possibilities. The Pokemon is susceptible to Ice, Electric, Psychic, and Rock-type attacks . Once again, your Psychic Pokémon can overcome it, but also other Pokémon such as Mammochon or Élékable.
Defeat Charizard, Arcanine or Tyranitar
The last Pokémon may seem the most difficult to beat because it will have already damaged part of your team. But his last 3 Pokémon will actually be the easiest to eliminate. Indeed, Arcanine and Charizard are both vulnerable to Water attacks .
If your Lagoon has a Ground attack and a Water attack, dismiss it at the end of the fight against Tadmorv. He can easily defeat both Pokémon in the last round.
But if Cliff sends his Tyranitar, it will then be necessary to provide a third Pokémon, especially since it has a 50% chance of coming out. Because of its dual type (Rock and Dark), Tyranitar has a double weakness to Fighting attacks . To overcome it, take in your team a Pokémon with two attacks of this type such as Mackogneur or Bétochef. If you have one, give priority to Lucario, especially if he has Riposte in immediate attack and Aura Sphere in charged attack.
Now that you have all the keys to beating Cliff, all you have to do is prepare your Pokémon for your next battle. If despite all this does not work, remember that if Cliff defeats you, you can face him again by healing your Pokémon or choosing a new team.
