How to Change League of Legends Language to Japanese 2022

Available in French, it is possible to modify the client so that it is in the language of your choice, including Japanese. Here’s how.

If you play League of Legends, the client, the store and all in-game information are offered in French. However, Riot’s game can be configured to appear in many other languages .

Due to its extension and popularity around the world, Riot Games has developed clients adapted to all of its servers and to the nationalities of the players.

Among all the available languages, you have the choice between English , Spanish , Portuguese , Russian or Japanese . However, compared to the age of the game, this last option is relatively recent.

The Japanese in League of Legends, an option that arrived late

When it arrived in France in October 2009, the game only had about twenty champions and a display depending on the language of your operating system. Distributed in Europe, North America and Asia, it is very easy to put it in English or French. However, some languages are slow to arrive despite demand from local users. This is the case with the Japanese.

Three years after the launch of the game and the opening of many regional servers, Japan is not yet entitled to its dedicated server. Riot Games announces the upcoming opening of the latter during the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) in 2012. But the Japanese are still playing with a server that is not in their language.

It was not until February 2016 , 7 years after the official launch of the game, that a Beta version of the Japanese League of Legends client was offered. Following the tests carried out and the popularity with local but also international players, the client is entitled to its official launch.

Since then, players who wish can take advantage of this Japanese version including a launcher, a client, annotations but also voices in Japanese.

The walkthrough to pass League of Legends in Japanese

Create a new desktop shortcut

In order to change the League of Legends language, you must already have the game installed on your computer. If you haven’t, you can download the game from the official League of Legends website . You should also create a shortcut accessible from your Desktop as this will make the operation easier.

Once the shortcut has been created, right-click on the game icon and click on “Properties”. A window like the one below will open. Then direct the mouse to the bottom of the window and click on “Open location” or “File location” depending on your version of Windows.

The location where the game is installed, often referred to as the “Riot Client” will open. Go back to see the choices “Riot Client” and “League of Legends” then click on “League of Legends” .

If you wish, you can also manually navigate to this folder by following this path: This PC > Local Disk (C:) > Riot Games > League of Legends

Change client language manually in settings

Once you are in the game folder, click on the “Config” folder which is the first visible folder. Several documents will then be accessible. Locate the one called “LeagueClientSettings.yami” and click on it.

How to Change League of Legends Language to Japanese 2022

A text file containing many lines of code will open in your word processor or NotePad. In all these notes, locate a line on which you can read locale: fr_FR

This line determines in which language the client and the game are offered. All you have to do is change “fr_FR” to “ja_JP” and the game will instantly switch to Japanese. Launch the game by clicking on the desktop and identifying yourself.

Be careful though because it’s not just the voices of the game that will be in Japanese. All the client will be too. So remember to remember how to start a game in order to select the option you want: Summoner’s Rift, Aram, TFT, classic or ranked game. However, if the choice of language no longer suits you, simply redo the entire procedure and type “fr_FR” instead of “ja_JP”.

Change language from Client properties

Note that there is a second way to change the game’s language . To do this you need to create a new game shortcut on your desktop. Right-click on it and then click on Properties.

In the “Target” part, copy and add the –locale=ja_JP extension just after the indicated text. This will automatically change the language of the League of Legends client. The trick also works if you want to view League of Legends in Korean. You can see how it works in the video below.

Why switch the League of Legends client to Japanese?

If changing the client’s language has no impact on the gaming experience, with the exception of purchases in the in-game store, it is above all the dubbing of champions that players are looking for . Dubbing in Japan is taken very seriously and the Seiyus (the voice actors hired to do character voices) are very involved in the process.

To satisfy your curiosity or find out if one of your favorite voice actors has voiced one of the game’s champions, you can go to this list of all available champions and their Japanese voice actors . To provide fans with the most immersive experience, famous Seiyus were recruited and this motivated many players to change the language of the game.

Takehito Koyasu , known to Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure fans for portraying Dio Brando, lent his voice to Sett and Twisted Fate . Masako Nozawa , the voice actress who portrays Son Goku in all Dragon Ball works, is also part of the Japanese cast of League of Legends and portrays Wukong . Other famous seiyus have thus lent their voice to some of the 150 champions that the game now has.

And if you too want to discover your favorite champions with the voice of some of your favorite anime heroes, now you know how to do it!
