Titanfall 2 unsupported resolution, launch crash, catalog creation error, disk write error, game not saving, stuttering
The PC version of Titanfall 2 is facing bugs and issues such as game not saving, launch crash, game won’t launch, stuttering, unsupported resolution error, etc.
Here I have compiled a list of errors and issues with the game, as well as their fixes and workarounds.
Titanfall 2 crashes, freezes
Titanfall 2 is a gem that was overlooked in 2016 due to its release date. Now that the game has launched on Steam, the game has a second chance.
However, Titanfall 2 PC players are facing errors and issues with the game such as crash on launch, error due to unsupported resolution, disk write error, directory creation error, etc.
Below are the errors and issues that players are facing. experience along with their fixes and workarounds.
Game not saving
Titantfall 2 players are reporting that the game is not saving their progress. After they close the game, they will have to start over.
The problem could be that your antivirus/Windows Defender is blocking access to the game to create save files.
To find Windows Defender in Win 10, open Windows Security > Virus & Threat Protection > click Manage Settings under Virus & Threat Protection Settings.
Click Controlled Folder Access, turn it on, and click Allow an app through Controlled Folder Access.
Click “Add allowed app” > browse all apps > go to Titanfall 2 installation folder and add titanfall2.exe. This will solve the problem with saving the game.
Game won’t start
According to players, when they launch Titanfall 2 nothing happens and sometimes Origins doesn’t even recognize that the game is installed or running.
There are several reasons why Titanfall 2 won’t launch and the following are the fixes.
Let’s start with a simple fix for why Titanfall 2 won’t launch. Launch the game, and if Steam shows it as running, wait for a while.
After a while, Origin will figure it out and launch Tatanfall 2. Either run the game directly from the exe file, and not from the Steam library.
Another fix for this issue is to open Steam > right click on Titanfall 2 > Properties > Local Files > verify the integrity of the game files. Let Steam complete the process and then launch the game. This will work without problems.
If the fixes above didn’t work, open Origin and navigate to My Game Library. Right click on Titanfall 2 and select “Find a game”.
Now go to the game’s installation folder and add Titanfall 2. Origin will restart and the problem will be fixed.
For some players, there doesn’t seem to be a “Find a game” option. If you are one of those players, close Steam and Origin.
Then start Origin, but run it as an administrator.
After that, launch Steam and the game will launch without problems.
Titanfall 2 players are reporting that they are getting an unsupported resolution error when launching Titanfall 2. The following is the complete error that players are facing.
CreateGameWindow failed. Resolution not supported?
This error is related to the resolution of the game. The first time players launch the game, it runs at 1280 x 720 pixels.
If your display doesn’t support the resolution, the game crashes on startup with a “Resolution not supported” error message.
This is an easy fix, all players have to do is change the game resolution in the config file. Go to your Documents folder and navigate to Documents\Respawn\Titanfall\local. Open the “videoconfig.txt” file in notepad and find the following settings.
Now, if your display is 1080p, set these settings as shown below.
Save changes, launch Titanfall 2 and it will start running with permission error.
Disk Write Error Fix
This is another error that prevents players from downloading or updating Titanfall 2. Below are the fixes for this particular error.
- Right click on Steam.exe > Properties. Compatibility tab > check “Run this program as an administrator”. Apply the setting and the error should be fixed.
- Open CMD and run it as administrator. Use the following commands and press enter after each one.
select disk # (# is the number of the hard disk where the game is installed)
attributes disk clear readonly.
- If the error persists, go to Steam/logs/content_log. Scroll down and look for “failed to write”. Open the file and it has paths to some corrupted files. Follow the path and delete these files and the game will install.
Fix not installed in Titanfall 2 Deluxe Edition
According to players, they are getting the following error when they launch Titanfall 2.
Titanfall® 2 Deluxe Edition is not installed. Please install it or try restarting the game.
Apparently Origin doesn’t recognize that the game is installed. First, players need to set Origin to the same download location as Steam. Open Origin > App Settings > Installs & Saves.
Set the location in the Game Library Location section. Now go to “My Library” and start downloading the game. It will recognize Titanfall 2 already installed and the error will be fixed.
If Origin doesn’t recognize that an installed game starts from scratch, there are two possible fixes for it.
The first fix is simple: open Origin and go to My Game Library. Right click on Titanfall 2 and select “Find a game”. Now go to the game installation folder and add Titanfall 2. Origin will restart and the error will be fixed.
Second fix: Stop download and uninstall Origin. Open Steam and launch the game from there. You will be prompted to install Origin.
Install it and this time Origin will recognize the game as installed and “Titanfall 2 Deluxe Edition will not install”. Please install it or try restarting the game” the error will be fixed.
Fix directory creation error
This is another Titanfall 2 bug that prevents the game from creating save files. The following is the complete error that players are facing.
“Error creating directory”
Error when trying to find the directory for the game’s configuration file: “
Because of this, players must start the game from the beginning. Here are the fixes.
One of the reasons for this error could be antivirus or Windows Defender. See the Game won’t save section for how to fix this error with Windows Defender.
Of course, the error also states a folder that it cannot access. For some players, this folder is closed in OneDrive.
This error can occur if you have changed your computer. Also, the game does not support cloud saving in Origin.
To fix this, players need to create a dummy account and play Titanfall 2 using that account. This will fix the error permanently.
Crash on startup
According to players, they are unable to play Titanfall 2 as the game crashes on launch. Here is how you can solve this problem.
One of the reasons for the crash of the game is the lack of administrator rights. Right-click the game executable > properties > Compatibility tab > check “Run this program as an administrator”. Apply the change, the game should run smoothly on launch.
If the above fix didn’t work, then your antivirus or Windows Defender blocking the game’s exe might be the culprit. Either disable your antivirus or exclude the game folder from it.
Here’s how to do it in Windows Defender on Win 10. Open Windows Security > Virus & Threat Protection > click Manage Settings under Virus & threat protection settings. Click “add or remove exclusion” under “Exclusion” > add exclusion > folder. Add the Titanfall 2 installation folder. Now verify the game files in Steam and this will fix Titanfall 2 crash on launch.
Another reason for the game to crash is the use of third party tools such as MSI Afterburner.
Just disable any third party tools or software you are using and the problem will be fixed.
Low FPS, performance fix
PC games are known to have performance issues due to the large number of configurations. Titanfall 2 players are reporting low FPS and stuttering issues in the game, and here’s how to fix it.
First, install the latest GPU drivers and make sure the background process isn’t using too much of your hard drive, CPU, and GPU.
If you’re playing on a laptop, it’s likely that the game isn’t switching to the dedicated GPU. For Nvidia GPU users: Open Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > select game > select “High Performance Nvidia Processor” in preferred graphics option.
For an AMD GPU, open Radeon Settings > Settings > Advanced Settings > Power > Switchable Graphics Application Settings. Select a game and select the “High Performance Profile” for the game in the “Graphics Settings” section.
If the scenario above doesn’t work for you, open Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > select the game.
Make the following changes.
- Set “Power Management Mode” to “Prefer Maximum Performance”.
- Set “Texture Filtering Quality” to “High Performance”.
- Set V-Sync to “On”
Disable in-game v.sync and you’ll see improved FPS and a stutter fix. If the stuttering still persists, follow the steps mentioned above but set the V-Sync to Fast.
This will fix the stuttering and give you a performance boost if you have a decent enough CPU and GPU.
That’s all for fixes in Titanfall 2 for errors like game won’t save, game won’t launch, resolution error not supported, disk write error, and more.
