Black Mesa crash, low FPS

Black Mesa has officially launched on Steam and Half-Life fans are very happy. However, Black Mesa PC is facing errors and issues such as bms.exe stopped working, random crashes, error 0xc000007b, stuttering, etc.

Below are the errors and issues that PC players are facing with the game. along with their fixes and workarounds.

UI missing, broken UI fix

Players are reporting that there is no UI to interact with when launching Black Mesa. This can be fixed by reverting to the old user interface or menu.

Go to your Steam Library > right click the game > properties. On the General tab, click on Set Launch Options, type in “-oldgameui” and click OK.

Now launch the game and the user interface will work as expected.

If you can see the UI but can’t work with it, follow the steps above, but this time enter “-forceuid3d9” in the launch options. The game will work.

Controller Support

Black Mesa does not have official controller support at the time of writing. However, there is a way to enable controller support for the game. Open Steam and in the top left corner click Steam > Settings > Controller > click “General Control Settings”.

A large Steam picture will open and you will have several options to choose from. If you’re using a Dualshock 4, check PlayStation Config Support, and if you’re using an Xbox One or Xbox 360 controller, select Xbox Config Support.

Launch the game and the controller should work fine with Black Messa.

Crash on startup, game won’t start.

Players are reporting that Black Messa just crashes on launch. Here are a few fixes to help you fix the game not launching and crashing on startup.

The first solution to Black Mesa crashing at startup is very simple. Go to your Steam Library > right click the game > properties.

On the General tab, click on “Set launch options” and type “-forceuid3d9”. Then download and install the DirectX files. Launch the game and it will work fine.

Another reason for the game to crash on startup could be your antivirus software or Windows Defender detecting the game executable as a Trojan.

Either disable your antivirus or exclude the Black Mesa installation folder from your antivirus software. Check the game files and run it. The game will launch without a hitch.

Lack of administrative rights is another reason for a crash at launch or a problem starting the game. Right-click on the game executable > Properties > Compatibility tab > check “Run this program as an administrator”. Apply the change and start the game.

Using third party monitoring tools such as MSI Afterburner can also cause the game to not launch or crash on startup. Disable any third-party monitoring software, even GeForce Experience, and the issue will be resolved.

bms.exe has stopped working error 0xc000007b Fix

According to players, they get “bms.exe has stopped working” error or error 0xc000007b when launching the game. To fix these errors, disable cloud save sync, delete or unsubscribe all mods, restart your computer.

Then navigate to the game’s installation folder, which is located inside the Steam installation folder “Steam\steamapps\common\Black Mesa\platform\config”.

Open the System32 and SysWOW64 folders and delete d3dx9_24.dll into d3dx9_42.dll. Then use the DXUpdate utility to reinstall the files you just deleted and both errors are now fixed.

Crash fix

Players are reporting random crashes while playing Black Mesa. Most likely, this is due to the installation of mods from the Steam Workshop.

Just remove all mods and the game will stop randomly crashing.

Stuttering, low FPS fix

Performance is a common issue in PC gaming and players have reported FPS drops and stuttering while playing Black Mesa. Here are a few things that will help fix the performance and stuttering of the game.

First, make sure you’re using the latest GPU drivers and that the background process isn’t using too much of your hard drive, CPU, or GPU.

If you are not running the game or any other program on your system, the CPU usage should not exceed 10%.

Open Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings. Select a game from the drop-down menu and scroll through the options. Make the following changes.

Set “Power Management Mode” to “Prefer Maximum Performance”,
set “Texture Filtering Quality” to “High Performance”.

Apply these changes and play Black Mesa. Both stuttering and FPS drops should be fixed.

If you’re still experiencing stuttering or low FPS issues, follow the steps above and set V-Sync to Fast.

Start the game, disable in-game v.sync and the display should be set to fullscreen. After that, you should not have any stutter while playing.

That’s all for Black Mesa fixes for bugs like game crashing on startup, bms.exe crashing, missing UI, etc.
