While worldwide reactions to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continued, nine countries expressed their open and indirect support.

The tension between Russia and Ukraine due to the Separatist Regions and the rapprochement with NATO resulted in the invasion of Ukraine.

More than 500,000 civilians were forced to leave the country due to the war, while hundreds of civilian casualties were reported.

While the violence of the war continued to increase from place to place, the world public opinion gave great and harsh reactions against Russia.

SUPPORT FROM 9 COUNTRIES TO RUSSIA

Countries supporting Russia's invasion of Ukraine

While heavy sanctions were announced against Russia, especially by Western countries, some countries expressed their support for the invasion, either openly or indirectly.

BELARUS

The Minsk administration, which conducted military exercises with Russia before the invasion and opened its lands to the Russian army, is on the side of Moscow in the war. It is claimed that Belarus will also be involved in the war.

CUBA

The South American country of Cuba supports Moscow in the occupation of Ukraine. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said he supports Vladimir Putin’s stance on Ukraine.

NICARAGUA

Another South American country that supported Russia’s invasion of the former Soviet country of Ukraine is Nicaragua. In his speech broadcast on state television, President Daniel Ortega stated that they stand by Putin and said, “Logically, military support is needed for the security of these administrations (Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic). If there is a war there, there will be no winner.” he said.

NORTH KOREA

In the statement made by North Korea regarding the invasion of Ukraine, it was reported that Russia was supported and the main cause of the crisis was the USA. In the statement made on the website of the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and stating that “Russia’s legitimate demand for its security was ignored”, it was also noted that “Washington is responsible for the disaster”.

SYRIA

The Damascus administration announced that Russia supports the recognition of the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine. Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad praised Moscow’s latest move, calling it “a step towards defending world peace”. In a statement made by President Bashar Assad’s office, it was stated that they are ready to work to establish relations with the two regions and that the independence of local governments can be recognized.

INDIRECT SUPPORT COUNTRIES

CHINESE

China, which has made statements that it has been on the side of Russia since the beginning of the war, blames the USA and the West for what happened. On the other hand, in the vote held at the UN Security Council on February 26, China abstained from the UN Security Council resolution demanding that ‘Moscow immediately stop its attack on Ukraine and withdraw all its troops’. Beijing states that diplomacy should not be avoided.

INDIA

India, which has been following a policy of ‘balance’ between Russia and the USA for a long time and has been criticized from time to time in Washington for its closeness to Moscow, also abstained by not voting against Russia at the UNSC meeting on February 26.

IRANIAN

Close relations between Tehran and Moscow have been known for a long time. Iran and Russia act together on many issues in foreign policy. Although the Tehran administration does not make a statement directly taking sides on the invasion of Ukraine, it makes statements stating that the process has been brought to this state by the West. However, there was no open support from Tehran for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

The United Arab Emirates ‘abstained’ from the UN Security Council resolution on February 26, which demanded that ‘Russia immediately cease its attack on Ukraine and withdraw all its troops’. The abstention of the UAE, which is seen as one of Washington’s most important allies in the Middle East, caused reactions in the West. Likewise, UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, had a telephone conversation the day before the invasion began. During the meeting, it was stated that the joint strategic and friendly relations between the UAE and Russia, as well as regional and international developments were discussed. On the other hand, no support has been given to Moscow from the Abu Dhabi administration regarding the Ukraine war.
